The University of Sussex (UoS) will participate with the School of Informatics and Engineering, and more specifically within the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science (SCCS). The core mission of the SCCS is to research how consciousness arises from neural activity, both for advances in basic science, and to support the better diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. SCCS is now recognized as internationally leading within this and allied areas. The SCCS comprises 12 core faculty across Psychology, Informatics, Neuroscience, and Psychiatry, and is presently home to 7 postdocs and 5 doctoral students, providing a rich cross-disciplinary research environment with access to dedicated cutting-edge facilities including fMRI, TMS, EEG, and high-performance computation.
Background: Recent work within the SCCS has involved the application of predictive processing theories to interoception (‘interoceptive inference’), neuroimaging work on the role of the insula in interoceptive awareness, and computational modeling work examining reinforcement learning and methods for analyzing functional connectivity. We also have an emerging research line using virtual reality specifically for time perception.
Role in TimeStorm: UoS will conduct neuroimaging and psychophysical experiments on specific aspects of temporal perception and cognition, using fMRI, EEG, TMS, and computational modeling. A particular focus will be on the role of interoception in temporal cognition. Additionally, UoS will contribute in model integration and assessment.
